Abstract

Imagine, for a moment that the difficulties you are experiencing at school become easier for you to manage; your teacher speaks  about the things that you can do and does not focus on the things that you find hard. Imagine your teacher actually talks and listens to YOU and asks how she can help you to reach your best hopes. Imagine a school where you are rewarded and acknowledged in the classroom for the small changes you make in working towards your best hopes, where your strengths are recognized and you are encouraged to dream about your future.  Imagine you could be at a school that does things differently.

The School of Merit in Johannesburg South Africa, has adopted a Solution Focused philosophy as the culture and ethos of the school. This means that difficulties and challenges’ do not define a child’s future. We inspire hope and confidence in our pupils and believe that small steps of change can and will lead to bigger changes and progress in the child’s life. The staff have all been trained to use Solution Focused principles as part of their outlook on children and their teaching. These amazing teachers creatively apply Solution Focused principles, not only as the lens through which they look at children but also as teaching strategies in their classrooms.

Learning objectives

of the socially constructed nature of all the models used in therapy/treatment.
